General FAQ

[    F.A.Q    ]
How often should I mow my lawn in Seattle?
Green Garden recommends mowing every 7 to 14 days from April to October in Seattle. It tends to slow down in October depending on how much rain and sun we get during the month. We do one last mow in November to end the season.
When should I fertilize my lawn in the Pacific Northwest?
March or April for spring application, September for fall application, and late November for winter fertilizer.

Seattle's mild winters mean grass never fully stops growing—it just slows down. Fall and winter fertilization keeps roots strong during our 150+ days of rain, so your lawn emerges thick and healthy in spring instead of thin and moss-infested.
Should I aerate and dethatch my lawn?
Many Seattle homeowners combine dethatching, aerating, and overseeding in one fall renovation project. This maximizes results—you're removing thatch, breaking up compacted soil, and adding new seed all at once.

Our heavy clay soil compacts easily, especially with our winter rain. Compacted soil prevents oxygen, water, and nutrients from reaching grass roots. Thatch (dead grass and roots at the soil surface) creates the perfect breeding ground for moss and disease in our wet climate. Most Seattle lawns benefit from dethatching every 2-3 years.

Aerating pulls small plugs of soil out of the ground, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate compacted clay. In Seattle's heavy soil, aeration every 1-2 years prevents long-term compaction problems.
When is the best time to overseed in Seattle?
September is the single best time to establish new grass in Seattle. Soil is still warm from summer (which speeds germination), fall rains keep seeds moist naturally (no daily watering required), and cool temperatures prevent weed competition. New grass has all fall and winter to establish strong roots before next summer.

We recommend overseeding bare spots in April or May, but you'll need to water consistently. Fall is more reliable.
